The Virtual Hood is an online community of friends spread across the planet. We communicate predominantly through a mailing list which provides a forum for ongoing debate, discussion and the sharing of information and ideas. The list is a private unmoderated affair with a focus on technology, spirituality, culture, art, philosophy, politics and the minutae of our daily lives.
The Virtual Hood can trace it's roots all the way back to the early bbs days of some of our members, who actually met on the old dial-up systems. However perhaps the spiritual birthplace of the virtual hood is the inner city neighbourhood of East Sydney, Australia.
In the early 90s a group of friend's met and congregated around this area - living streets away from each other gave us a real sense of community. By the mid 90s however many of the "hood" were taking off around the globe following their dreams and so on.
At this time, one of the clan started to call the email exchanges between the local and global hoodsters the "virtual hood" - and the name stuck. Many years later we still have some of the original people from the old days - but also many new ones that have since joined on
We try to keep the virtual hood pretty rule free. In recent times we've added a simple procedure - based on common sense regarding inviting new people to the hood - otherwise our simple tenents are:
This ftp server has been set up to exchange any large files thru the virtual hood. This alleviates the need to email these files to everyone. You are welcome to use the public ftp for whetever files you need to - but of course seeing as its very public don't put illegal shit up there.
Also to ensure the space doesnt get used for non-hood ftping we ask you dont give the access details out to anyone. and it's capped at 20 mb so clean up after yourself and delete any files your finished with.
The ftp details are available thru the virtual hood - ask and ye shall recieve.

The Virtual Hood offers its members a space to house your personal web pages. The url is www.vhood.net/username - the password to access the site is available via the list.
